Orty
The visitor centre at the Orty mining site is closely tied to the unique character of its location, where traces of human industry meet the gradual return of nature. Orty is a place where the landscape still bears the imprint of mining, yet nature slowly reclaims it. The design aims to create architecture that respects the geological and topographical specifics of the site – both materially and formally.
The spatial arrangement of the visitor centre echoes the underground tunnels. Solid and void alternate, allowing nature to enter the interiors and create a distinctive atmosphere of immersion in the landscape. The centre provides spaces for exhibitions, lectures, as well as areas dedicated to relaxation and education. Natural light is emphasized throughout, with specially designed ceiling structures shaping a pleasant ambience for various activities.
Pathways throughout the site follow the natural topography, enabling visitors to discover the terrain intuitively. The main access route is clearly defined and accompanied by a “path of slowness”, inviting visitors to explore the surroundings at a more contemplative pace. This trail encourages moments of pause and interaction with the site’s history and natural features, allowing visitors to sense the mystery of the underground even before entering the mine itself.
