Layers of (perma)culture
The competition proposal for the new Alšova South Bohemian Gallery is grounded in the concept of culture and art permeating everyday life across different historical periods. These are symbolized by layers, which are reflected both in the building’s volumetric articulation and in its material and color scheme. The building’s mass is essentially a simple cuboid, horizontally segmented into four blocks. These transform under the influence of external environmental forces – edges become softened, shapes grow more diverse, and at times the structure verges on sculpture. Radiant veins and embedded boulders – symbols of art – emerge on the surface.
The building’s outer shell most prominently unfolds into the entrance zones, creating a smooth transition between the public space and the gallery itself. This dynamic envelope continues with the visitor along the main vertical axis of the building, guiding them via the central staircase all the way up to the rooftop exhibition terrace. In contrast, the exhibition spaces are characterized by clarity and simplicity, forming a neutral, highly functional, and adaptable framework for both temporary and permanent exhibitions.
